Earlier this morning, news broke that the list of 30 nominees for this year’s Grand Prix d'Angouleme was announced, and did not include a single female creator. The Grand Prix is a lifetime achievement award, and the winner is named president of the following year’s Angouleme International Comics Festival. In the event’s 43-year history, just one woman, Florence Cestac, has been awarded the Grand Prix. Marjane Satrapi (Persepolis) and Posy Simmonds (Gemma Bovery, Tamara Drewe) have been among those nominated in years past.

In the wake of today’s announcement, Fantagraphics Books and Daniel Clowes endorse the French group BD Egalite in its call for a boycott on voting for this year’s list, and Clowes has announced that he will withdraw from consideration as a result.

“I support the boycott of Angouleme and am withdrawing my name from any consideration for what is now a totally meaningless ‘honor.’ What a ridiculous, embarrassing debacle,” says Clowes.

Here’s 3 pages of a comic I stopped working on. I’m trying out a lot of things right now while I work on a new book of shorts and this is something that was almost working but ultimately fell apart. I wrote something without thinking the look and the comic got less and less appealing to read as a comic as it went on. These things are always a learning experience though and now I know how to approach my next comic.

But I really liked these pages and wanted to share.

Happy new year, everyone! Let’s all be even better this year.

Someone with a social anxiety disorder will never get tired of hearing you say:

“I’m here for/with you”
“I like you”
“I love you”
“I value you as a person”
“Your opinions matter to me”
“I’ll go with you if it’s too scary”
“No matter what your anxiety tells you I’m not going anywhere”
“Your feelings are valid”

Even if you’ve already said it. Say it again. And again. Please.
Cause it may seem silly to someone without S.A.D., but it’s actually really reassuring to be reminded of having support even if we were just reminded last week, or last month, or yesterday. It’s important. Really important. Cause the anxiety will often lead us to feel alone, unloved, like the person might go away if we share our feelings, even when we know it’s not true. It’s a million times easier to be convinced by someone else than by our own anxious brains sometimes.

This has been a PSA.

Also don’t get annoyed when they need the reinsurance. They do believe you but their mind tricks them that what you said isn’t true when they truly know it is, they just can’t control it.

yes. this is not about you not ‘showing it enough’ – it’s about the anxious person feeling anxious

Petra von Kant – the one with the bitter tears – is in a relationship with Karin, a younger woman. By “in a relationship” I mean they kiss without moving their heads sometimes and talk about their feelings a lot. You know it’s going to end well when Karin says, “I need a man from time to time. That’s the way I am. It doesn’t affect us.” Spoiler alert: it affects them. Petra, who basically treats her live-in assistant as a slave, becomes – get this – a slave to her feelings for Karin. She has a rough go of it, saying things like, “My heart is sore as if it has been stabbed.” We’ve all been there, Petra. Straight girls, amirite? I should mention that this is the most gorgeous movie in the history of time and space. Her tears may be bitter, but Petra’s got a real eye for decorating.
